Our second meeting of the semester will be a conversation on the book Amateur by Thomas Page McBee. McBee was the first trans man to fight in Madison Square Garden, and this memoir tells the story of his experience learning to box in the lead up to that event. The conversation will be moderated by Emil Lawrence. In recommending this book, Emil explained that the book is ultimately a meditation on toxic masculinity, gender norms, and what it means to live authentically. Though those are admittedly weighty subjects, McBee's style is consistently accessible and engaging.
