Catherine McGowan's research interests include a critical approach to information flow and the role of information governance and data privacy in cementing data rights as human rights. She is also interested in algorithmic aspects of society, including: social identity construction and expression within digital worlds; understanding the relationship between digital information and the construction of social identity and cultural knowledge; the parallels of social and computational algorithms and how they shape the development of artificial intelligence and express posthuman ideals; propaganda; and digital humanities.
