The Board of Governors has promoted Teaching Instructor of Communication Erin Christie Ph.D. '14 to Assistant Teaching Professor effective July 1, 2024.

Christie earned a Ph.D. from SC&I in 2014 and is the Internship Coordinator for the Department of Communication and the faculty advisor for the Rutgers Public Speaking Organization, the Rutgers Debate Union, and Women in Communications.

She teaches the classes Professional Writing in Communication, Internship in Communication (online), and Principles of Interviewing.

As advisor of the Rutgers Public Speaking Organization, Christie has led the competitive forensics organization to the collegiate finals level 35 times and to the national level 3 times. Christie also co-runs the spring Department of Communication’s Public Speaking Competition and has done so in face-to-face, virtual, and hybrid contexts. Most recently, Christie partnered with the Rutgers Learning Center to develop a presentation skills tutoring program which is now available to all Rutgers University students. 

Christie’s research expertise includes social interaction, identity and interaction, and qualitative research methods. She is specifically trained in interpretive microanalysis. She has published many conference papers, received two top paper awards, one best-edited book award where she co-wrote a chapter, served as an editorial assistant, and has several peer-reviewed publications.

Christie is the recipient of three top awards from SC&I: the Excellence in Teaching Award from the formerly named Professional Development Studies in 2019, the Appreciation Award for Outstanding Support, Leadership, and Service from Rutgers University-PRSSA, which is based at SC&I, in 2015, and theDistinguished Achievement as a Part-Time Lecturer Award in 2012.
