The Byrne Seminar “Cultivating Citizenship to Support Democracy,” taught by Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway, is, according to Rutgers website, “designed to heighten understanding of the roles and responsibilities of citizenship and features conversations with distinguished leaders on critical questions related to citizenship.”
In these conversations, Holloway discusses a set of questions with “distinguished leaders from the corporate, political, nonprofit, media and faith communities,” including, “What role can we play in confronting the accumulating challenges in our society? What should we reasonably expect of our institutions and what do these institutions owe us? What are our responsibilities to be good civic actors when we are confronted by a public discourse that appears uninterested in speaking to our common values?" according to the course description.
One of the American leaders President Holloway spoke with during one of his Byrne Seminar classes was SC&I alumnus Mike Emanuel COM’90, chief Washington correspondent for FOX News Channel and co-anchor of FOX News Live. Their conversation is captured in the video clip below, where they discussed "development of the skills and practices to critically consume media."
