Fifty SC&I faculty and students will attend the 108th National Communication Association (NCA) convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, from November 18 to November 20. The convention’s theme is “Honoring PLACE: People, Liberation, Advocacy, Community, and Environment.” See the complete list of SC&I presenters.

We will also be hosting a reception on Friday, November 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Marriott – Galerie 1.

The convention will feature nine in-person sessions live-streamed for a virtual audience. In an introductory message on the convention website, NCA First Vice President Walid Afifi noted the lineup “includes a session that will spotlight the Supreme Court’s deeply flawed 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson (‘separate but equal’) ruling through engagement with descendants of both original parties to that lawsuit as panelists” and that all nine sessions are “groundbreaking in their own ways.” In the weeks before the start of the convention, the NCA is hosting six theme-based webinars. These online sessions allow registrants to engage with leading scholars whose work relates to the convention’s PLACE theme. Founded in 1914, NCA is a nonprofit membership-based scholarly society. According to the NCA website, its mission is to advance communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry. NCA serves the scholars, teachers, and practitioners who are its members by enabling and supporting their professional interests in research and teaching.
