
Serita Sargent (they/them) is a Ph.D. student in Library and Information Science at Rutgers University. They obtained their bachelor's in Computer Engineering at New York University and before the Ph.D. program was a Software Engineer for three years at Verizon. Their research work is around carceral and surveillance technologies, how they tie into the prison industrial complex and its relationship to chattel slavery as it impacts Black and Brown individuals. Sargent works with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals forming advocacy groups, community plans and policy change. Their focus is centering the voices and stories of Black communities and using Black radical tradition to enact social change.
