Luis Contreras is a Ph.D student in Media Studies at the School of Communication and Information. He received his master’s degree in communication studies from Cal State LA in 2021. He has been teaching as a part-time lecturer at the community college and university level. Most recently, he spent his summer working as a Storytelling Instructor for a summer academy at Snapchat’s headquarters in Santa Monica, California. His scholarly interests lie at the intersection of social media, resistance movements, and guerilla communication. He expects to study how alternative media such as internet memes, street art and graffiti are used to spread subversive messages that typically do not receive coverage by mainstream media.
