Talk title: Combating Visual Misinformation in Online Networks

Abstract: The proliferation of misinformation in today’s media environment threatens national security, social cohesion, and public health. Yet, most research to date has been focused on textual misinformation, while ignoring the multimodal nature of information production and consumption in online networks, especially in the form of digital images, memes, and videos. In this talk, I will outline the unique characteristics of multimodal misinformation as well as corrections, and propose potential solutions to address these challenges.

Bio: Cuihua (Cindy) Shen is a professor of communication at UC Davis, the co-director of the Computational Communication Research lab. She is the chair of the Computational Methods Division of ICA, and the founding associate editor of the journal Computational Communication Research, as well as the associate editor of JCMC.
