On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, 57 new SC&I communication majors were inducted as members into the Zeta Delta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association’s official honor society at Rutgers University.

Assistant Professor of Communication, DaJung “DJ” Woo, who has been the chapter adviser of Lambda Pi Eta since last fall, said her responsibilities include recruiting new members, reviewing their applications, and helping the student leaders of the chapter plan events throughout the year.

At this year’s ceremony, Woo delivered a talk to the new inductees, and  following her speech, student leaders addressed the newly inducted members (given COVID restrictions, only about 20 attended the in-person ceremony). Following a script provided by the NCA, they explained the honor society’s history, what it stands for, and more. They then gave the new members certificates, pins, and gold honor cords they can wear at graduation.

After the ceremony concluded, the students and other attendees participated in a networking exercise, during which they introduced themselves to one another, discussed the communication major, potential job offerings, and other experiences.

Lambda Pi Eta 2022“This year, the student leaders had to navigate various challenges when organizing events due to the COVID-related restrictions and guidelines, and I am so proud of what they achieved together this year,” said Woo. “The induction ceremony went smoothly and involved fun networking activities that helped members learn about one another. I am especially thankful for Nabiha Malik, the chapter president, for her leadership and dedication throughout this academic year. I feel honored that I get to work with such excellent Communication students.”

Lambda Pi Eta hosts a ceremony every spring for members who join throughout each school year. New members are recruited every semester, and there is a deadline in each semester by which students must submit their applications, as announced by Professor Woo via Comm major listserv. To join, applicants must be Communications majors, have completed at least 60 degree credits, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and have a communication GPA of 3.25 or higher.

More information about the Communication Major is on the Rutgers School of Communication and Information website
