Bridging clinical expertise and communication strategy, Rida Zainab Shah is redefining how healthcare connects with patients.

For Rida Zainab Shah, the path from practicing medicine in Pakistan to pursuing a master’s in health communication and information at Rutgers SC&I has been one of discovery, growth, and purpose. Recently recognized with the program’s “Outstanding Student Award,” Shah has distinguished herself through academic excellence, leadership, and a clear vision for the future of healthcare. With a foundation in clinical medicine and a passion for strategic communication, Shah is using her education to improve how healthcare organizations connect with patients by integrating data, empathy, and innovation. In this Q&A, she shares how SC&I helped her reimagine her career and sharpen her skills for the future.

SC&I: What led you from practicing medicine in Pakistan to pursuing a degree at SC&I?
RZS: My journey started in Pakistan, where I earned my medical degree (MBBS) at Dow University of Health Sciences. During medical school, I realized how much of a difference strong communication and accurate information made in patient care. That realization became the foundation of my career interests and eventually brought me to Rutgers' School of Communication and Information (SC&I). I was drawn to SC&I because of its interdisciplinary spirit and real-world focus, and I’ve never looked back.

SC&I: How has SC&I allowed you to integrate your medical background with new skills?
RZS: It’s been a place that’s allowed me to blend my medical background with communication strategy and data fluency in a way that truly resonates with me.

SC&I: Tell us about your current role. How does it connect with what you're learning?
RZS: Right now, I’m working as a Health Industry Marketing Coordinator at Dynamic Health Institute. It’s a role that allows me to bridge my knowledge of healthcare with strategic messaging and data insights. We’re always thinking about how to connect with patients more effectively.

SC&I: What’s next for you professionally?
RZS: Alongside this, I’m actively applying to full-time roles in consultancy, compliance, and healthcare administration. I’m excited about opportunities that will let me use my clinical background, research skills, and the strategic thinking I’ve gained at SC&I. What I love most is being able to contribute to meaningful projects that make a difference. That said, navigating the job market and trying to find that perfect fit can be daunting, but I try to treat it as a learning curve and stay optimistic.

SC&I: Which courses or professors have had a lasting impact on you?
RZS: SC&I gave me more than just academic training, it changed how I think. Courses like “Health Message and Campaign Design” and “Mediated Health Communication” challenged me to think creatively and critically, while those focused on data and information systems gave me the tools to translate insight into action. One person who’s had a lasting impact on me is Teaching Professor Richard Dool—his mentorship helped me build confidence, grow professionally, and push myself outside of my comfort zone.

SC&I: What other experiences at Rutgers have helped shape your journey?
RZS: I also gained so much through my academic support roles at Rutgers. Whether I was assisting with teaching or supporting program management, those experiences taught me how to communicate clearly, stay organized, and adapt—skills I know I’ll carry into every future role.

SC&I: What advice would you give to future SC&I students?
RZS: My biggest piece of advice is to stay curious and take initiative. SC&I has so much to offer, from the diversity of its courses to the openness of its faculty. Don’t hesitate to consider roles beyond the classroom—whether it’s research, assistantships, or internships. Those experiences make a huge difference. Also, trust that your unique background, whatever it may be, can become your biggest strength here. Lean into the blend of communication and information, and you’ll be amazed at how many doors it can open.
