J. Sophia Fu Awarded a 2023 SCIP Fellowship
Fu was chosen from among a competitive pool of candidates to participate in an innovative SciComm Identities Project science communication fellowship for pre-tenure faculty of color.
Assistant Professor of Communication J. Sophia Fu has been awarded a 2023 SciComm Identities Project (SCIP) Fellowship by The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute, Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, and the URI Science and Story Lab.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity given the nature of my work for social impact and community resilience,” Fu said.
The SCIP, according to its website, is a one-year professional development opportunity for pre-tenure faculty at U.S. institutions and was designed “to prepare the next generation of science communicators from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds.” The 2023 fellowship will focus on the intersections of climate change and energy, and fellows will study issues ranging from data-driven sustainable transportation to institutional barriers of energy poverty. The project is supported by a $2.8 million collaborative National Science Foundation grant.

Fu’s research interests revolve around organizational communication, social networks, digital technology, and social entrepreneurship and innovation. Fu is dedicated to applying mixed methods to answering one question: How can organizations more effectively tackle societal challenges through innovation?
Fu has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and has won awards for her research from the Academy of Management, National Science Foundation, International Communication Association, Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action, National Communication Association, and Association for Chinese Communication Studies.
Fu is dedicated to applying mixed methods to answering one question: How can organizations more effectively tackle societal challenges through innovation?
She received a master’s degree in Statistics, a management certificate from the Kellogg School of Management, and Ph.D. in Media, Technology, and Society, all from Northwestern University.
