Description:
This course provides an introduction to, and overview of, community engagement theory and practice and its relevance to building the relationships that serve the information needs of communities in the digital age. Topics covered include community in theory and practice, social capital, social networks, information needs of communities, engagement methodology, evaluation, and collective impact and their relationship to library and information science organizations.
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain and critique theories about communities and the way they work
- Describe community engagement methods and tools and the role of LIS institutions in utilizing these processes
- Analyze the implications of engagement techniques for LIS organizations and communities
- Apply theory and research to challenges facing communities
- Develop programs, services, and resources that reflect the changing information and engagement needs and aspirations of 21st century communities
