Benitez said she discovered her interest in journalism as a teenager, and then trained for it at Rutgers.
The prestigious and highly competitive fellowship was formed by The Faith and Politics Institute after the 2020 death of the late civil rights leader and U.S. Representative John Robert Lewis. As a fellow, Wilson will concentrate on studying the six principles of nonviolence and the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
Awarded for their work as journalists and photographers, the winners credit SC&I for preparing them for success.
“The world needs creative, committed, and responsible journalists and media makers more urgently than ever, and these students are leading the way,” said Chair of the Journalism and Media Studies Department and Professor Lauren Feldman.
Civadelic, who aspires to work as the editor-in-chief of a magazine, said because of the people she met and experiences she had as a SC&I student, she “feels prepared to be a journalist and lead the rest of my life giving back to young, aspiring professionals.”
Hailing from Drexel University, Harvard University, and the University of Michigan, the three new faculty members will join the Library and Information Science Department.
Nearly two dozen SC&I instructors were thanked and celebrated by Rutgers University-New Brunswick students during the January event hosted by TIIP.
The Vicious Cycle, a Rutgers campaign launched and staffed by SC&I faculty, staff, and student peer educators at the SC&I Center for Communication and Health Issues (CHI), was created to help reduce stigma surrounding substance use disorders at the university and help connect Rutgers students to vital recovery resources and harm reduction strategies on campus.
Rutgers faculty, students, and alumni were well-represented at the 2018 Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC).
