SC&I Distinguished Professor of Communication Brent Ruben has been named Champion in Global Health 2024 by the Rutgers Global Health Institute. This award, according to the Institute, “is given to extraordinary leaders in our global fight for health equity.”
“I am extremely pleased to receive this award,” Ruben said. “It is particularly meaningful because of the critical work of the Institute, its leaders, and its faculty. It is truly an honor to be recognized for contributing to their efforts.”
The Rutgers Global Health Institute honored Ruben in October at a special event held as “a tribute to those who consistently go above and beyond and have made a significant difference in addressing health inequity here in New Jersey or around the world,” the institute wrote.
Ruben, the founder and senior university fellow at the Rutgers Center for Organizational Leadership and advisor for strategy and planning in the Rutgers Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, researches communication systems theory. His research program also focuses on the application of communication systems concepts to enhance personal and professional competence and organizational strategy in varying settings—interpersonal, intercultural, organizational, health, educational, and leadership.
Ruben was one of the founding faculty members of the SC&I Communication Department and he served as chair of the department for a number of years. He was also the first director of the integrated communication, information, and library science Ph.D. Program at SC&I.
Ruben is the author of more than 50 books and 200 journal articles and book chapters, and he is the founding editor of the “Communication Yearbook.” His most recent books include “Leadership, Communication, and Social Influence: A Theory of Resonance, Activation, and Cultivation” co-authored with SC&I Lecturer Ralph Gigliotti Ph.D.’17 and “Communication and Human Behavior, Seventh Edition,” co-authored with SC&I Professor of Communication Lea Stewart.
