SC&I’s Library and Information Science (LIS) Department heads to Atlantic City, N.J. for the upcoming New Jersey Librarian Association (NJLA) Conference  from May 30-June 1. This year’s timely theme is “Speak Freely.” In addition to SC&I’s platinum sponsorship of the conference, our alumni, students and faculty will be presenting on various topics.

SC&I is also being represented by the conference’s two keynote speakers: On Thursday, May 31, Ph.D. Alumnus Nicole Cooke (’12), associate professor at the School of Information Sciences at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will deliver the address “Speak Freely: Reflective, Equitable, and Inclusive Conversations for All,” which explores some of the barriers and enablers of open and critically reflective conversations, and suggests some strategies for working towards equitable and inclusive dialogue for all. SC&I Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media Studies Khadijah Costley White will present “How We All Survive in an Informational Age Full of Misinformation” on Friday June 1, addressing the current climate where news and information are routinely ignored, and acts are seen as political weapons, making the need to speak freely and in truth is more imperative than ever.

Thursday’s roster highlights Rutgers University Distinguished Professor and award-winning author of "Feminism Unfinished: A Short Surprising History of the American Women's Movements" Dorothy Cobble, who will lead “Raising Our Voices.”

Recent graduates of SC&I’s Master of Information program will also be presenting on Thursday. Stacy Brody, who was accepted into the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) 2018-2019 Associate Fellowship Program, will lead “Get the Word Out! How to Generate Buzz in Your Online Communities” that discusses content creation, success stories and best practices, as well as review a few free digital creation platforms. LISSA Co-President Kristen Matteucci will examine “Is Your Meeting Room Policy Problematic?” in a workshop to create the best policies for your community.

On Friday, June 1, Assistant Teaching Professor Joyce Kasman Valenza heads “Reference Librarians Speak Freely," exploring experiences in today’s information environment with open conversation to follow. Part-Time Lecturer Isaiah Beard will be presenting “Digitization on a Dime," which examines low-budget strategies to handle digitization while ensuring quality.

Also on Friday, our Master of Information (MI) students will be presenting at Poster Sessions.  Meghan Moody and Daniel Delmonaco will showcase "Repository: The Importance of Providing Practical Applications for Metadata Coursework," and Michael Stirm II will present "Could Librarians Have Saved Tim Piazza," based on his paper "Information Behavior of Fraternities."

The NJLA Member Scholarship will be awarded to Ryan Oxild, a current Master of Information student scheduled to graduate in Spring 2019. Oxild will be using the scholarship to promote the cause of early literacy. According to the NJLA Conference website, “Each and every year, NJLA and NJASL invites librarians, all types of library workers, and supporters and vendors to participate in engaging discussion, thoughtful workshops and presentations, networking and professional development during this three-day conference."

The NJLA works to enhance the effectiveness of academic and research librarians. It provides opportunities for professional development, continuing education, and networking.
