Vivek Singh Promoted to Associate Professor

The Rutgers University Board of Governors has promoted Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science, Vivek Singh, to Associate Professor with Tenure, effective July 1, 2020.

In an email to the SC&I community, Dean Jonathan Potter said, “I am more than delighted to say that Vivek Singh has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.  An excellent accomplishment and something we can all celebrate in the midst of these challenging times.  Well done Vivek!

Singh’s research focuses on creating human-centered solutions for societal problems using a combination of AI techniques and social theory. His work utilizes machine learning while being conscious of the issues of data privacy and algorithmic bias. An expert in computational social science, Singh started the Behavioral Informatics Lab at SC&I in 2015.

Active projects in the lab include:
1) The Rutgers Well-being Study where detailed personal data about user behavior, social interactions, and mobility are being used to predict their health status, emotions, and well-being.

2) Detecting and preventing cyberbullying in online environments.

3) Privacy of personal data in online and physical environments, where the group studies the newer problems brought to fore by large-scale human data collection and designs ways to mitigate them.

4) Algorithmic Bias where the group audits existing algorithms and develops modifications to reduce bias.

Singh’s work as SC&I has been funded by multiple research grants from the US National Science Foundation and Google. In 2015, SC&I’s Library and Information Science Department awarded Singh the Distinguished Achievement in Research Award.

Prior to his arrival at SC&I, Singh was a post-doctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also worked for four years as a Lecturer at Institute of Technical Education (Macpherson), Singapore.

Singh received his Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine, in 2012.
