SC&I’s Professional Development Studies offers young professionals, new managers, or experienced executives a wide range of continuing education programs that enhance skills that lead to success in any career setting.
We’re thrilled to connect with Fidel A. Garcia, who is working toward earning his Public Relations Certificate from PDS, and hear about his journey with the program.
What drew you to the Professional Development Studies Program?
I was first drawn to the PDS program because of the reputation of Rutgers University and its communication degrees. My positive experience with admissions and registration also drew me to the program. Lastly, the convenience of online studies and breadth of course options available also interested me.
Why did you decide to take the Public Relations certificate program?
I decided to take the Public Relations certificate program as a way to update my skills and resume during unemployment, network with other students, gain the advice of professors, and maintain a semblance of structure and sanity during the pandemic. I already have an undergraduate degree in marketing, and an MBA. This certificate will hopefully help me remain competitive in the workplace against peers with formal degrees in communication.
What skills and insights did you take away from the program?
The program offered me the opportunity to showcase my strengths and experience through the coursework, which boosted my confidence during unemployment. I learned new depth in my skills to support the advances of technology, including but not limited to social media.
What classes and professors have had the most impact on you?
Each of the professors has had an impact in their own way, but they have all been caring and supportive of my learnings. From Interpersonal Communication to Giving Back Through Public Relations, to Strategic Public Relations, each course has given me a greater understanding of the discipline and confidence to apply the material in the workplace.
How are you applying what you learned in the program?
I donated my final communications plan assignment from Giving Back Through Public Relations to my chosen nonprofit. It could serve as a roadmap for their future fundraising campaign. I’m also leveraging my final course assignment from Integrated Marketing Communication as an additional document with my resume and cover letter when submitting to employers as an example of my abilities.
Do you have any advice for anyone at all career levels who are considering taking the program?
My advice is to make learning a top priority throughout your career. Not only to maintain skills but also to reflect professional commitment. Also, use the opportunity to engage and connect with the other students. One way is through the course discussions board by contributing constructive feedback and praise to peer posts. Another way is through networking on LinkedIn.
