Members of SC&I’s faculty, Ph.D. students, and alumni will attend and present at the 2022 Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 24-26.

This year’s theme, “Go Back and Get It: From One Narrative to Many,” signifies the organization’s intention to examine the history of Library and Information Science (LIS) education and how it impacts the present. According to the conference website, “Library and Information Science educators must begin examining the complex history of our own profession and institutions. By including a more nuanced, honest look at our own history, we can infuse more cultural humility into the library profession.”

SC&I alumna and part-time faculty member Xiaofeng Li, Ph.D.’18, Assistant Professor, Library Science, at Clarion University in Clarion, Pa., will receive the Bohdan S. Wynar Research Paper Award on October 26. She shares the award with co-author Shelly Mathis, Library Associate with the Grand County Library District in Kremmling, Colorado. Their paper, “’My Mom Recommended It to Me’: Understanding Homeschoolers’ Information Practices,” was published in The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults, the official research journal of the Young Adult Library Services Association. During the Curriculum Special Interest Group session on October 25, Li will present on “LIS Curriculum from Past to Present.”

During the Social Justice and Equity juried papers breakout session on October 26, Associate Professor of Library and Information Science Charles Senteio and doctoral students Kaitlin Montague and Matthew Ackerman will present “’Louder for the people in the back:’ Amplifying historically marginalized voices through qualitative research.”

Associate Professor of Library and Information Science Vivek K. Singh will attend the ALISE conference. On October 28, Singh will participate in the inaugural in-person/virtual 2022 Information Science Summit, co-hosted by ALISE, the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), and the iSchools organization. Doctoral student Arcadio Matos will present at the 2022 ASIS&T Special Interest Group Artificial Intelligence (SIG-AI) workshop on October 29. SC&I is a SIG sponsor.

Also presenting at the conference is SC&I Distinguished Alumna Nicole A. Cooke Ph.D’12, MLS’99, COM’97, who was recognized by the SC&I Alumni Association in 2022 for her contributions to the field of Library and Information Science and her other extensive professional accomplishments and a librarian and a scholar. Other SC&I alumni who are presenting include Emily Knox, Ph.D.’12, Souvick Ghosh, Ph.D.’20 , and Vanessa Kitzie, Ph.D.’16, MLIS’11.
