UPDATE, Nov. 22, 2017:

The following awards were presented to SC&I-affiliated faculty, students and alumni at the 2017 NCA convention:

Alumna Lora Appel Ph.D ’16 was awarded the Gerald R. Miller Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award, an NCA Scholarship Award.

Alumna Maggie Boyraz, Ph.D. ’17, whose dissertation was recently completed here in the department, won the outstanding Dissertation Award from the Group Communication Division.

 Professor Marya Doerfel took over as vice chair and program planner for the Organizational Communication Division.

Research Professor Alexa Hepburn was installed as the new Chair and Galina Bolden as the Immediate Past Chair of the Language and Social Interaction Division.

 Director of Undergraduate Studies in Communication and Assistant Teaching Professor Brian Householder was elected chair of the Communication Assessment Division.

 Professor Laurie Lewis won for best-edited book in the Applied Communication Division.

 Professors Craig Scott and Laurie Lewis won the 2017 Outstanding Edited Book Award from the Organizational Communication Division for The International Encyclopedia of Organizational Communication.

 Professor and Chair of the Communication Department Craig Scott was part of a special “legacy” panel featuring lead authors of the most cited 20th century Article of the Year winners in organizational communication.

 Ph.D. Student Inyoung Shin (sole author) – was awarded the Top Student Paper in Human Communication and Technology Division.

SC&I faculty, students and alumni will be traveling to sunny Dallas, Texas next week to present at this year’s National Communication Association (NCA) convention, titled “The NCA 103rd Annual Convention: Our Legacy, Our Relevance,” being held at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel from Nov. 16 – 19, 2017. Preconferences will be held on Nov. 15.

This year, 35 people representing SC&I will participate in over 24 presentations and panels. Others will be helping run division meetings or taking part in the association’s legislative assembly. SC&I is also sponsoring or a key part of several exciting events at the convention.

One of the pre-conferences, titled "PC10: Our Legacy, Our Relevance: Breaking Down Privilege Using Communication Theory to Build Frameworks that Support Inclusion," which was organized by Professor Marya Doerfel and will include Associate Professor Bernadette Gailliard and Associate Professor Vikki Katz as panelists, will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City View 8, Fourth Floor, in the Sheraton Dallas Hotel.

According to the NCA website, the pre-conference will address “Issues of inclusion and exclusion that have emerged as a major challenge facing organizations and institutions as both society and the workforce become more diverse. The recent U.S. election has brought these issues even more to the forefront. While academics and policymakers have made strides in valuing diversity and providing more equal opportunities to workers of different race, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, and sexual orientation, debates continue over policies and practices designed to promote inclusion. This pre-conference aims to bring communication experts together to present and challenge the way their particular topic addresses issues of organizing and communication processes that drive inclusion and exclusion.”

On Thursday, Nov. 16, SC&I will take part in the NCA Graduate School Open House, which will be held from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at SC&I’s booth (# 325) in the Lone Star Ballroom of the Sheraton. This fair is an opportunity to highlight both our interdisciplinary doctoral program and the Master of Communication and Media (MCM) Program.

On Friday, Nov. 17, SC&I’s Department of Communication will host a reception from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wild Salsa, located a few blocks from the Sheraton at 1800 Main Street. Current faculty/students and alums are encouraged to come by starting at 6 p.m. The annual reception provides an opportunity to network with other faculty, potential job applicants, students interested in our programs, and members of NCA leadership
