Personal safety

If you are ever concerned about the immediate safety of anyone on campus at any time, dial 911.

The alternate Public Safety (non-emergency) phone number is 732-932-7211.

Safety at the university

Rutgers-New Brunswick is a vibrant community with tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff within the populated area of central New Jersey.  We recommend you follow the safe practices advice in the university publication Safety Matters.

This publication also contains information about safety activities and practices on campus.

Rutgers maintains an emergency text system for the university community.  If you are an employee or student, you can subscribe so that you get emergency text notifications.

Please visit and review the Rutgers Police and Public Safety website and the Emergency Response website.

Safety at SC&I

The Dean’s Office at SC&I can help you with safety information and would like to receive your reports of safety issues in our facilities. Contact Karen Novick at Knovick@rutgers.edu or Kathy Frauenheim at kathfrau@rutgers.edu.

Please review our emergency safety sheet

SC&I has its own emergency text system which will be used when there are problems limited to SC&I and not the entire university. To subscribe:

  • Send the keyword RUSCI
  • You will be asked to reply with a passcode; use 724724 (that is SCI twice on the number pad of your phone)
