Scholarships and Awards

The School of Communication and Information (SC&I) is proud to be able to recognize high achieving undergraduate and graduate students each year by awarding scholarships and awards. Each undergraduate and graduate program at SC&I offers its own scholarships and awards.

Information about the department scholarships and scholarship eligibility criteria are listed below. All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid by completing a Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). Additional information about the FAFSA application and other financial aid information is available on the Rutgers University Financial Aid webpage.

Instructions

Details and instructions are provided below that should be followed when the application cycle is open. See below for timeline and dates.

  1. All applicants must set up an account in the scholarship application portal in order to access the application. If you applied for a scholarship last year, then you can use your previously created account. Register here to create a new account. Once logged in, the link for the Scholarship page will appear. Please note, to complete an unfinished application at a later time, log-in again with your credentials. For a full list of available scholarships, please see SC&I Scholarships & Awards below.
  2. The scholarship application requires the following supporting documents to be uploaded with each individual application:
    • An unofficial copy of your Rutgers University transcript (incoming graduate students should upload a most recent copy of undergraduate or graduate transcripts)
    • An essay expressing why you are deserving of the scholarship and/or how you have a demonstrated financial need (you may re-use the same essay unless the scholarship description states a specific topic)
    • Current resume or CV
  3. Undergraduate Communication (COM) majors and undergraduate Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) majors should complete the scholarship application associated with that award. COM and JMS students may apply for more than one award within their COM or JMS program. If you are an ITI, MCM or MHCI student, you will only need to submit one scholarship application along with the supporting application documents (unofficial transcripts, essay and resume). The faculty scholarship committee will review your application and consider you for the most suitable award offered by that department.
    • For MI applicants: An essay is not required. However, within the application, you will first specify which type of scholarship and award you would like to be considered in the application. Then if you select 'Merit-only awards' you will only need to upload a MERIT-BASED AWARD document as described in the application. If you select 'Financial need awards' you will only need to upload a NEED-BASED AWARD document as described in the application. If you select "Awards based on merit and need", you will need to upload both the MERIT-BASED and the NEED-BASED documents as described in the application. MI applicants will still be required to one set of unofficial transcripts and a resume.

PhD Program

Several types of financial support are available to highly qualified doctoral students. In most cases, students who apply to the PhD program by January 5 are considered automatically for awards as part of the admissions process. Thus, PhD students do not need to submit an application through the SC&I scholarship application portal. A few awards are also for students further along in their doctoral studies. All awards are highly competitive.

SC&I offers the following highly competitive forms of support:

  • Teaching Assistantships
  • Graduate Assistantships
  • Assistant Instructor/PTL positions
  • SC&I Fellowships
  • Pam Richards Fellowship
  • Grant funding
  • Hourly graders/research assistants

Many of these include a stipend, general health benefits and tuition remission. We also provide travel grants/assistance to all students presenting scholarship at scholarly conferences regionally, nationally and internationally.

Rutgers University also provides various forms of highly competitive support:

  • Presidential Fellowships
  • Diversity Fellowships
  • Bevier Fellowships
  • Teaching/Graduate Assistantships in other departments
  • Grant funding outside SC&I
  • Learning Community Coordinators, Dorm RAs and other full-time staff jobs

The Rutgers School of Graduate Studies also provides some travel grants/assistance. Notably, they also run GradFund, a fellowship advising service. GradFund helps graduate students at Rutgers learn how to apply for merit-based fellowships and grants to support their graduate studies.

Other forms of support (e.g., Spectrum Fellowships; Fulbright; international government and corporate sponsorships; and part-time, adjunct and full-time teaching positions at nearby schools) may also be available. In many of these cases, the Ph.D. program is able to provide tuition remission or some matching support. Those who are eligible for need-based financial aid should contact the Rutgers Office of Graduate Professional Admissions for additional information.
