COM Independent Study and Research

Communication majors have the option to work closely with professors doing either a Communication Independent Study or Research in Communication. While the Independent Study courses (04:192:491 and 04:192:492) do not count as credits toward the Communication major, Research in Communication (04:192:470) does.

To arrange either of these study options, contact a faculty member about working with you and prepare a one-page description of your proposed independent study or research project. For advice about selecting a faculty member, you may contact Director of Undergraduate Studies in Communication Brian Householder.

Once you have a faculty advisor:

The deadline for submission is before the end of the Add/Drop period. Submit the completed application, signed by your faculty sponsor, along with a copy of your unofficial transcript and your one-page project description to the Office of Student Services in Room 214 of the SC&I building. Once you receive approval, you are assigned a Special Permission Number to proceed with the enrollment and commence your Independent Study or Research in Communication.

Become a Tutor

Are you a COM major looking for an enriching opportunity? Would you like to work closely with undergraduate students and earn credits toward your degree requirements? If so, apply to become a tutor in one of the various Communication courses. Applied Study in Communication 04:192:495 is a 3-credit supervised study in communication pedagogy; it does not count toward the major.

How to Complete the Tutor Application Process

To apply to be a Communication department tutor, you must be a full-time student. The first step is to contact a faculty member about working with you. Once you have a faculty advisor:

  • Agree on the number of meetings and course requirements
  • Download and complete the Tutor Application that includes:
    • Application form
    • Departmental tutor policy
    • Description of responsibilities
